The Modern Abolitionist
One volunteer’s journey.

Britney: The Beginning

These first couple of weeks at Humansave have been extremely enlightening. The first training session we had was probably the first discussion I’ve ever had with people surrounding human trafficking. I feel like, considering this was my first discussion, this just shows how unaware the general public can be of this huge issue. I also feel like the majority of this obliviousness comes from the fact that it is hardly ever reported on the news/media or hardly ever brought into the public’s attention, whether that be through school presentations or workplace discussions. Through this discussion, I learned a lot of the underlying circumstances that victims go through, it’s easy to assume how someone got to that situation but never understanding why it was difficult for the person to leave and what happens to a person once they finally do, including stress and emotional disorders or financial concerns. One of the things I look forward to the most with being a Humansave volunteer is the opportunity to have presentations in schools because I believe that children and adolescents need to be aware of the red flags and how easy it can be to fall into this trap. Moving forward, I hope to learn more about how to better educate and inform the public about human trafficking and the effects that come with being a victim.
